I have a Sunday night practice of going over my schedule for the coming week to mentally prepare and to be sure I have everything covered for upcoming gigs, getting my son where he needs to be and taking care of my home and business. Every now and then as I go through my schedule and see the various groups I get to address, the courses I am teaching and the amazing people who I am coaching, I have to catch my breath.
Week after week, day after day, I am in awe of the fact that I am truly living my dream.
I am humbled to be one of the lucky ones; one of those people who gets paid to do what I love to do – so much so that it never feels like “work” to me. So as 2016 comes to a close, let me ask you, is that also true for you? What dreams are you putting off or avoiding just because you’re too afraid to face the possibility that you might fail (or even that you might succeed!)? The unknown can be frightening, but the truth is that every day is an unknown!
There is a way you can create what you want in your life; to make it real, more palpable and to make it your lived experience. It is what I call living your life by design rather than by default. I have devoted my life to this process and teaching others how to do the same. Over the past 6 years I have worked with hundreds of people just like you who want something more from life. They feel an inner calling but don’t know how to get there, or even how to start.
That’s exactly how I felt 10 years ago and I remain eternally grateful that I mustered up the courage to make that leap into the unknown and pursue my dream.
Want to know how I did it? Here’s what you need to make it happen:
A clear vision for what you want and where you want to go. Nothing happens without first having a vision. From my 28 years of experience as a professional coach, here’s what I know for sure – we all dream too small! We keep our visions small to play it safe and avoid the emotional disappointment of failure. I was that way too, but after seeing what is possible, I have a new motto:
Dream Big But Start Small
After being clear on your vision, the next thing you need is ACCOUNTABILITY!! You need help to stay in action. When I first went out to be a full-time speaker in 1994, I failed! Yes, that’s right. I failed. I remember telling one of my bosses at my job at the time that I was leaving the job to become a speaker and trainer and he laughed in my face. He looked down at me with a smug expression and said, “Oh man, my brother-in-law is a speaker. Those people are so full of themselves. Who do you think you are to go out and do something like that? What will you be doing to your career!?”
I was devastated internally but stood my ground and told him I would be inventing my career on my terms. Well, I did do just that, but it did not look like I had initially planned!
Thirteen years later, I tried again, and this time I applied this principle of dreaming big but starting small. I did not know what I was doing either time I went out to become a speaker but the second time around, instead of giving up my entire income to chase my dream, I started developing and teaching courses while still working in my full time consulting and therapy practice. I joined a coaching program to give me structure, support and accountability. Then I downsized my office to reduce my overhead and from there, I was able to make the shift to full-time speaking and teaching. It was a step-by-step process, with support and accountability that led me to where I am no doing exactly what I envisioned all those years ago.
Today, what I believe and teach is that if you are not failing on a regular basis, you are not living a big enough life! Step up! Playing it safe is one step away from complacency, and you know you were born for more than living the status quo!
It is your time to shine. The end of 2016 is right around the corner, and we are looking at a New Year dawning.
I invite you to step up, take some chances and put yourself into a program that will help you solidify your vision AND give you killer structure, support and accountability. It will teach you the exact steps I took to reinvent my life and led me to the belief that all of my dreams come true!
Life Design 2017 starts the first Saturday in February.
This program changes lives. I hope yours will be one of them!
