Everything can be taken from [you] but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
Viktor E. Frankl
History has happened, and there is considerable uncertainty around us right now. But then again, there was uncertainty before 11/9 too. We just don’t live our daily lives confronting the myriad of unknown possibilities each day.
The opportunity we have facing us is a powerful one. We have the chance to choose our attitude and perspective, to “choose one’s way.” We must look within now and ask, “Who will I be in the face of this uncertainty?”
Life does not always turn out as we hope. Our dreams sometimes fall short.
And still: Who will you be?
The truth of our lives, at any time and in any circumstance, is that we always have the ability to choose our way. We have the power to define our lives based on our beliefs. We have the potential to pursue meaningful goals. We have the ability and capacity to grow as human beings, to be more loving, more kind, more accepting, and yes, more vocal about our beliefs in oneness and unity.
You always have the power to decide and declare who you will be in the face of any circumstance. I invite you to constitute yourself, from this moment forward, as an awake, aware, loving, child of the Universe. You are imbued with wisdom, clarity, unity, and a heart filled with oneness and love. You could choose to respond with fear, or with faith in God, your family, your community, and your dreams. You can decide to respond with resignation, or with resolve to bring about the just, peaceful, loving country that you envision.
Create a compelling vision for our nation. Maintain hope that this social wake up call will move us to a higher, more loving place. It is possible. Borrowing from the words of Barack Obama, “Yes, we can!”
Practice the high conscious attributes of acceptance and surrender. That does not mean you must be passive in living and speaking your values. Follow the example of Gandhi – passive, peaceful, yet clear about the world we are committed to creating – a world that embraces, welcomes, loves and accepts every member of our human family.
As Emerson wrote, “What lies before us, and what lies behind us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” What lies within you is the most incredible power in the universe and in your life – the power to choose your way.
When we stand together, we are stronger.
To our freedom to choose!
